Sophomore service requirement
As part of the University Honors Program, sophomores are required to complete a minimum
of 10 hours of volunteer service each semester.
Volunteer service is any work that benefits and improves the community, whether on
or off-campus. The importance of volunteer service lies in its ability to connect
students with real-world challenges, raise awareness of social issues, and help meet
the needs of the broader community. Service allows students to connect their academic
learning with real-world needs, develop leadership and empathy, and strengthen their
sense of civic responsibility.
Student Responsibilities
- Complete a minimum of 10 service hours each semester during the Honors Sophomore year.
- Log service hours in whole-hour increments.
- Upload their Service time on TheLink within one month of completion.
- Submit completed tracking forms to the Honors Program Director by Reading Day each
semester.
Service Expectations

- Students should not be asked to drive vehicles, run personal errands, or perform household or childcare
duties.
- Participation in extracurricular activities (e.g., student government, cheerleading) does not count toward service hours.
- Students should not work more than four hours in one day.
- Activities should not involve hazardous activities or confidential work such as using
power tools, handling hazardous chemicals or performing duties typically handled by
paid staff.
- Students should not supervisor care for or supervise minors or be required to interact
with individuals convicted of felony crimes or sex offenses.
- Service settings must maintain inclusive, discrimination-free environments consistent with Ƶ policies.
